Neighborhood
About the neighborhood
Our home is located on the edge of Longinoja Park. It is about 10 km from our home to the center of Helsinki. The bus stop is about 500 m away and the nearest train station is 1.1 km away.
The area where our home is located is called Sepänmäki, and it is part of Malmi. Historically, Malmi has been a market town. The area features both historical charm and modern buildings. Malmi is one of the development areas of the city of Helsinki. Malmi also has a former airport, which is now a recreational area.
Malmi has restaurants, shops, and basically everything you need, but the real attractions are in the center of Helsinki and along the seashore. For day trips, we recommend Porvoo, Fiskars, Tampere, and Turku. You can visit all of these in a day. In the summer, we recommend the Savonlinna Opera Festival, but that is a two-day trip. We also recommend to take a trip to Tallinn. A ferry takes about 3 - 2 hours and the tickets cost something between 30 and 10 euros.

We are a family of three. We, the parents, have worked for a long time as middle school teachers. Sauli teaches technical crafts and Mira teaches Finnish language, literature, and drama. Mira currently works at an international school.
Our daughter Selma is 13 years old and attends the same international school where her mother teaches. Selma plays the viola in the Helsinki Junior Strings orchestra and competes in swimming. Sauli is also interested in music. He sings and plays the guitar in a band, with which we occasionally get to travel around the world.
Our whole family is interested in culture and nature. We often go to theaters and concerts. When traveling, we like to visit museums and art exhibitions. We also love good food and wine.
We have previously exchanged homes with a Danish family in 2016 and an Austrian family in 2017. After a break, we decided to start home exchanging again because it is such a unique way to explore the world.
