About the neighborhood
Welcome to eastern Canada. We live in an area called the maritime provinces. More specifically we live in the province of New Brunswick. It has a population of about 780 000 residents. The capital city is Fredericton. We live 2 hours south east of the capital in the small town of Sackville. It has been dubbed the heart of the maritimes because it is truly in the centre of the maritime provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island). Sackville is 10 minutes from the Nova Scotia border and 2 hours from it's capital city of Halifax. We are only a 45 minute drive to the province of Prince Edward Island and 1hr and 30 minutes to it's capital city of Charlottetown.
Our area also boasts the highest tides in the world coming from the Bay of Fundy. These spectacular tides can be seen from a couple of great locations www.thehopewellrocks.ca or www.town.parrsboro.ns.ca . Both these areas would make wonderful day trips and are only about an hours drive. The Hopewell Cape Rocks have interesting geological rocks and are near to Cape Enrage where you could rappel down a cliff and to Fundy National Park (www.pc.gc.ca/eng/pn-np/nb/fundy/index.aspx) where you could hike trails and sea kayak. Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, in addition to the high tides, has a nice community theatre as well as a dinosaur museum.
Sackville is a town of about 6000 residents. It was named the cultural capital of Canada in 2008. It is a lively little spot mainly due to its location and the fact that it houses a small liberal arts university. There is a quaint farmer's market every Saturday morning and a fabulous theatre, Live Bait Theatre (www.livebaittheatre.com). Sackville is also known for the Tantramar Marshes www.mta.ca/marshland which were reclaimed lands for the farmers of the area. Sackville also has a lovely waterfowl boardwalk and the National Historic sit of Fort Beausejour (www.pc.gc.ca/eng/lhn-nhs/nb/beausejour/index.aspx) where the French lost the battle for the land and were eventually deported out of the area.
